2024 Scholarship Recipients

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the 2024 winners:

Calgary Board of Education

Henry Wise Wood’s Kate Hos is described as “an incredibly impressive student,” with grades resulting in a near perfect academic average in all her senior courses. Kate is also a highly determined and hardworking athlete, with numerous city and province-wide podium finishes in cross-country and track running. Participating in
track at a club (Calgary Spartan and CALTAF) as well as on school track, cross-country and volleyball teams, her strength, and determination have seen her overcome injury to earn accolades. She has also earned early admission to the University of Pennsylvania, where she plans to participate in the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country and Track Teams.

Daison Li, of Sir Winston Churchill High School, is a self-motivated individual who brings energy and enthusiasm to his daily activities. Besides displaying strong athletic skills, he was cerebral in his approach to sport and school alike; while a captain of the football and a member of the wrestling and rugby teams, he also received academic honours with distinction throughout his high school years. His virtuosity with a flute contributes to earning a gold with the symphonic band at the Alberta International Band Festival in his grade 11 year. Daison will be attending the University of British Columbia.

Calgary Catholic School District

Kailah Gouglas, the Bishop O’Byrne High School recipient, is described as a standout soccer player, showcasing not only excellent skill but also exemplary sportsmanship. She participates at both a school and club level. In addition, she plays field hockey, badminton and was on the school swim team. Aside from sports, Kailah has a passion for music, dedicating a huge portion of her free time as a member of the Calgary Stampede Showband, Brass Choir and Calgary Stetson Showband, while also playing in the school jazz band. Her strong academic record has earned her acceptance into the Faculty of Science and technology at Mount Royal University.

Kai Deausy of the Bishop Carroll High School has consistently maintained an outstanding academic record while navigating a demanding academic schedule. He was honoured as the Male Athlete of the Year in grades 10 and 11, participating in cross-country, track and field, volleyball, and badminton. He has secured ten CSHSAA championship podium finishes and seven ASAA Provincial championship
podium finishes (with six and four winning performances, respectively), between school and club (CALTAF) events. He was the trumpet section leader in the Bishop Carroll Symphonic Band and has also been selected to be the Valedictorian of the Bishop Carroll Graduating Class of 2024. Kai will be attending the University of Calgary in the fall.

Scholarship News

  • The Father Whelihan Memorial Scholarship Society is pleased to announce that the value of the scholarship has increased to $2,500 per recipient. This has been made possible through both the astute management of the portfolio along with the generous support of several organizations and individual contributors, including many previous winners. A special recognition to The Calgary Booster Club, the Paddy Luke Society, and the Calgary Italian Sportsman’s Dinner Association for their ongoing support.
  • The Society welcomes its newest Executive Committee member, Nicole Losier, as a Vice-President – School Liaison and Social Media. Nicole has been an associate member for the past year and has been active in our selection process. Her employment as a teacher with the CBE (currently at Crescent Heights High School) delivers a unique perspective to the Executive.
  • We are planning to have an informal social get-together in late summer for supporters and previous winners. Stay tuned…details to follow by email and through our website.
  • Speaking of…check out our refreshed website at www.fatherwhelihanscholarship.ca! Heartfelt thanks to our webmasters, Sabrina Scarpino and Marc Francois.
